A Few Words from Kindred Spirits . . .
There is something mystical about corn. It is older than memory and so conjures up lure of gods and legends. Yet corn is also a simple, grinding staple of life. In his thought-provoking "Cornfield," Jim Nichols has somehow been able to capture the essence of both the surreal and mundane, the ancient and the modern of this ubiquitous grain we take for granted. In doing so, he prompts us to reconsider the earth and its bounty and our spiritual connections to Godhead. The multimedia aspects of the installation remind us we are God-like creators, while the vivid imagery of his paintings remind us we are creatures designed by the very same intelligent force. Beautiful and moving.

Walking through Jim Nichols' Cornfield exhibit, I was reminded of how creativity is so deeply important to our lives. Since I work in the field of industrial ecology, I found the themes of the show deeply engaging: respect for our beautiful land, the importance of food on many levels, and the summoning of our inner beauty to permeate all our perceptions and experience. I hope everyone can take a few quiet and reflective moments to stroll through the Cornfield. They will find themselves spontaneously remembering their own joy, within and without!

The work on display at Jim Nichols' Cornfield Exhibit reflects a message which is close to the artist's heart. It is life accepted, both as toil and as radiant beauty. It is a celebration of life's path, and of the magic and patience and fruit inherent in each seed. He imbues it all with a sense of the mystical and of the essence from which it all comes and will eventually return. This is art that asks us to set aside the burden, and to transcend. Cornfield is drawn from the depth and skill of an artist, but foremost from a man who understands the beauty of the journey we all share.
